Our Lodging-Kumano World Heritage Tour-
Authentic Ryokan Inns with centuries of tradition serving pilgrims

We will stay in Ekoin monastery for the first night of this trip. Second night in the hot spring village of Yunomine Onsen. For the 3rd night we’ll be staying in a ryokan hotel in the coastal town of Katsuura, near Nachi Falls and Nachi Shrine. All accommodation serve local cuisine and have in-house hot springs. All rooms are Japanese style – with futons instead of beds, and toilet facilities are usually nearby down the hall. Lodging is based on double occupancy. If beds are preferred, this is possible only on our last night in Katsuura. If you have specific dietary needs please let us know in advance and we will do our best to accommodate.

Day1 Ekoin Monastery, Koyasan
  • Ekoin monasterys is one of the oldest active monasteries in Koyasan, an internationally famous Buddhist retreat village founded 1,200 years ago. We choose this monastery because of its history, its beautiful garden and architecture, and because the monks are very friendly and invite guests to participate in daily activities such as meditation, the goma fire ceremony, and lantern-lit tours of Okunoin cemetery.
  • Located near Okunoin cemetery, one of the holiest places in Japan.
  • Serves special vegetarian food, prepared in the Japanese Buddhist tradition by monks daily.
Day 2. Yunomine Onsen. Ryokan Azumaya.
  • Ryokan Azumaya has been serving travelers for over 250 years, since the middle of the Edo-era
  • A variety of in-house hot spring bathing facilities as well as the nearby 1,800 year old World Heritage Tsuboyu Hot spring, which serves anyone on a first-come, first-serve basis for 30 min at a time (private use for 1-2 people, 770 yen entry fee not included)
  • Delicious ryokan food (many small plates of hand-crafted food, see pictured below).
Day 3. Taiji. Nanki Taiji Onsen, Kayuu or Manseiro Ryokan, in Katsuura
  • Very comfortable coastal ryokan hotel with locally caught seafood served for dinner each night.
  • All rooms have an ocean view
  • Enjoy an open-air, seaside hot spring after a full day of river-boats and hikes around Hayatama Taisha Shrine.
