The Kumano Kodo is one of only two pilgrimage routes globally designated as World Heritage by UNESCO. It is a pilgrimage route leading to the grand Kumano Hongu Shrine that has been walked by emperors, ascetics and peasants alike for over 1,000 years. There are four Kumano Kodo routes leading to Hongu,
After completing their pilgrimage to Hongu, pilgrims would then go on to Nachi Taisha and Hayatama Taisha, completing the pilgrimage to the Kumano Sanzan, or three Grand Shrines of Kumano.
Located on the Kii- peninsula South of Osaka, this tour explores Japan’s natural beauty with some of its most sacred sites. The trip is located in rural Japan with little establishment. All accommodations though comfortable, very traditional and simple. Known as Ryokan inns, they serve delicious local cuisine and provide us with bento lunch boxes every day. Most will include in-house onsen hot springs.
This is a combines hiking and sightseeing. The majority of our itinerary is outdoor based. Although there will be walking involved every day, there will be ONE FULL DAY of hiking.
-Please note that itineraries are subject to change based on weather and other factors.
-Please note that this is a very rural area of Japan and we may not have the option to enjoy many luxuries we have in everyday life.
-The only accommodation available although a great experience, will also be simple and traditional. Food options are limited. Although our lodging may have the means to improvise meals for us, please expect most meals to be traditional Japanese cuisine. If you have specific dietary needs please let us know in advance and we will do our best to accommodate.
